Low Platelets Solution the Ayurvedic way

Often we have heard that dengue is a very dangerous disease but what makes dengue dangerous is the reduction in platelet counts.

What are Platelets ?
Platelets, or “thrombocytes” as they say in doctor’s language , are small, irregularly shaped cell fragments. The average lifespan of a platelet is normally just 4 to 9 days. They are the blood component who are responsible for clotting of blood in case of a cut or wound in a mammal.

How Platelets work?

They are a component of blood and are present all over the body with blood. When they find any damaged blood vessels, they bind together to restrict the blood from flowing out of the body.

The normal or healthy range of platelet count is 150,000 – 450,000 platelets per micro liter of blood.

Any kind of increase or decrease in platelets can be very dangerous for a human body. We will have a look of what are the impact of platelets increased and decreased count on human body.

Petechiae-photos

Impact of Platelets disorder:-

If the platelets count is very low in such cases excessive bleeding may occur. Also in some cases the number of platelets can be very high in such cases the chances of blood clots will be very high as that is the main functionality of platelets, which may cause restriction in blood vessels and result in dangerous issues as a heart attack, increase in blood pressure, brain hemorrhage or the blockage of blood vessels to other parts of the body, such as the extremities of the arms or legs. The name give to the disease of the platelets is called a thrombocytopathy, which could be either a low number of platelets (thrombocytopenia) or it can be a decrease in function of platelets (thrombasthenia).
Even an increase in the number of platelets (thrombocytosis) is not considered normal.

Following are the major reasons for low platelet counts disorder –

1. Improper production or less production from bone marrow. Usually the other blood cells like RBC’s or WBC’s will also be low in such cases. Bone marrow depression is caused by a variety of reasons like drugs, drug reactions, alcohol, cancers etc.
2. In some cases the body’s destruction rate for platelets is more than the rate at which the platelets are  produced in the bone marrow.
3. Spleen Problems can also be the reason for low platelets.
4. Dengue and different types of cancers can also be the reasons for low platelet count.

There are other type of disorders that reduce the number of platelets, such as heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) which is caused by formation of abnormal antibodies that activate platelets or thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) that typically cause thromboses, or clots, instead of bleeding.
What is ITP ?

Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura  is the problem of having a very low platelet count  with out any known reason . Most cases of ITP are related to the production of antibodies which destroy or are against platelets. A very low platelet count can lead to visible symptoms, such as purpura (large bruises), or more seriously, bleeding diathesis.
How to increase low platelet counts in an Ayurvedic way?

The ayurvedic way of treatment of low platelet count consists of using some natural remedies, ayurvedic medicines helpful to increase low platelet count. The remedies are particularly effective in treatment of Idiopathic Thromobocytopenia purpura – ITP i.e. Low platelet count due to reasons mostly unknown and also for cases like Dengue.

The Ayurvedic treatment used to increase platelet count consists of the following –

Aloe vera and Amla juice – 20 ml twice daily ( empty stomach)- morning and evening , with equal proportion of water.
Wheat Grass Juice – 30 ml – once daily in the morning

Papaya leaf juice- This is the most commonly used solution for treatment of a patient for low platelets count. A  juice has to be made with the combination of papaya leaves with Giloy leaves, with more amount of raw and fresh papaya leaves and   the quantity of the juice should be around half a cup , this will help in increasing the count platelets and will stabilize the condition to a great extent. This is an effective and low cost herbal solution for patients suffering from low platelet counts. The effects will be visible in 2 to 3 days.

1. Juice of leaves of Papaya – 2 tablespoonfuls twice daily ( Give leaf juice and not fruit juice)
2. Juice of Beetroot (Chukandar in Hindi) – 1 tablespoonful thrice daily

Always consult the doctor if the platelets are going down in a great amount.

Ayurveda and Garbha sanskar (prenatal education)

We all have heard the story of Abhimanyu, the son of Arjuna couple of times in our childhood from our grandmothers that how Abhimanyu learned entering into the chakravyuha when he was just in his mother’s womb. Abhimanyu heard and learned this technique when Lord Krishna was narrating it to Subhadra during her pregnancy period. Not only this, but when Prahlad’s mother was pregnant, she used to listen devotional songs which made him become a great devotee of Lord Vishnu even though taking a birth in Rakshasa family.

Ancient Indian medicine, i.e. Ayurveda puts emphasis on the spiritual, mental and physical preparation of the expecting mother to give birth to a healthy child. In Ayurveda, this theory is described as ‘supraja Janan’ or EU-maternity.  It basically means preparing the couple in planning their pregnancy at least three months prior to the baby conception. Pregnancy should be by choice and not by chance. The planning should firstly begin with panda shuddhi which means purification of gametes (sperm and ovum). One should always keep in mind if the couple is not mentally fit and stable even though they are being physically healthy cannot give birth to a healthy child. The mental calmness and firmness of mind is very much related to one’s eating habits and depends on many other factors of lifestyle. For giving birth to a healthy child, it is important to stay away from spicy food items and addictive substances during pregnancy period.

garbha sanskar

Universally it has been proven that the fetus is not just a mindless mass of flesh, but it responds and capable of understanding, receiving information from outside forces. The fetus is an evolving human being that has got full rights to receive optimistic and inspiring feedback or garbha sanskar.

Daily practices of garbha sanskar which are to be given during pregnancy period to the child in the womb are clearly prescribed in the Ayurveda. Not just daily diet taken by expecting mother is mentioned, but routine body care, yoga techniques as well as reading material and instructions are available in Ayurveda. Various subjects of discussion are written along with music and mantras that can be listened to during pregnancy period.

Development of parent-fetus bonding:

Do you know that feelings and thoughts in mind of parents affect babies in the womb on a large level. Until any thought is expressed verbally, it remains in an unexpressed form in mind. At this time, its wavelength is shortest and it has got maximum energy at this level.  Selfless and unspoken thoughts bear and transfer maximum sanskar on the fetus.

Effect of music:

Scientifically, it has been proven that the fetus responds to music from 7th months of pregnancy. You would be glad to know that a foetus of 7th month starts hearing from mother’s womb and from the nearby surroundings and responds to them as well. Heartbeat of mother is the first sound the child hears when in a womb because it is the most nearest sound for the baby. This is the reason why a crying child clams down when her mother holds her close to her heart. It is believed that the child in the womb gets energy for the development of his mind and body when an expecting mother listens to the special music. You would be surprised to know that listening to sound of veena (an Indian musical instrument which is held by goddess Saraswati) and flute along with Samveda mantras are very helpful in giving birth to the healthy child at the time of childbirth. Various cassettes and CD’s like ‘Garbha Sangeet’, Garbha Sanskaar: Blessings for the new arrival” are published and can be easily brought by pregnant women from markets.

Lifestyle tips for the pregnant women:

According to Ayurveda, an expecting mother should stay away from movies depicting scenes of violence, horror and murder. This is because these kinds of stuffs can produce a negative effect on the child’s character. Also, expecting mother should live in a company of those people who throw positive influence over her. She can listen to soft music, read positive and self-inspiring books, view beautiful works of art, develop only constructive frame of mind with positive thoughts in her mind and last but not the least contemplate pleasant landscapes.

Herbal medications:

In Ayurveda, two types of ghees are recommended for mother-to-be. The name of first medicated ghee is ‘kalyanak ghrita’ to be given during 4th, 5th months of pregnancy on daily basis. One tsp of this ghee is widely given to expecting mothers, especially in southern states like Kerala in India. The herbal preparation ‘kalyanak ghrita’ is considered very effective in the development of the mental faculties of a growing fetus. Also, it is very beneficial for development of all body systems in fetal baby. ‘Kalyanak ghrita’ when taken regularly helps in fighting anemia in the mother as well as prevents any kind of congenital abnormalities. Another ghee is ‘Thanka three great’ which is to be taken during the last month of pregnancy i.e. 7th, 8th and 9th months of pregnancy. Regular intake of this ghee promotes complete developments in the fetal body and known to bring good fortunes to the newborn child. It also aids in the full term normal delivery. Both these ghee has got cow’s ghee as their base during their preparation.

Ayurveda and Hypothyroidism

When problems take place within thyroid gland, which further leads to insufficient circulation of thyroid gland, then it is termed as hypothyroidism.

According to nidana, hypothyroidism has been classified into three categories:

  • Primary (due to thyroid failure)
  • Secondary (due to pituitary TSH deficit)
  • Tertiary (due to hypothalamic deficiency of TRH)

The last two are rare in nature and Ayurvedic treatments cannot help in combating them.

Causes of hypothyroidism

You would be sad to know that the prime reason for getting affected by hypothyroidism is a deficiency of iodine in the body according to sarvadha Suva bahvanam. In many cases, it has been seen that this ailment is also caused by pituitary or hypothalamic disease too.

If hypothyroidism is caused by genetic and hereditary defects, it is categorized under adibala pravritta vyadhis in Ayurveda and is asadhya.

If congenital defects like ectopic thyroid gland, thyroid gland agenesis and dysgenesis are responsible for causing hypothyroidism, then it is categorized under janmabala pravritta vyadhis. But this can be preventable if proper pathyapathya is followed during pregnancy.

Symptoms of hypothyroidism:

The person affected with hypothyroidism suffer from various symptoms like dry skin, high levels of lethargy, frequent headaches, coldness in the hands and/or feet, obesity, decrease in metabolism, anorexia, disordered menstrual  function, frequent constipation, decreased mental and physical activity.

Confused about which types of drugs to be taken at each level of hypothyroidism? Well, don’t get upset. Keep in mind that at hypothlamo pituitary level, anti stress drugs along with nasya karma and medhya rasayana drugs are highly valuable. If hypothyroidism is at thyroid gland level, thyroid stimulatory drugs are suggested. But if hypothyroidism is at metabolism level drugs like sukshma, deepana, lekhana, ushna, teekshna and pacahana are recommended as these drugs are very helpful in enhancing body’s metabolism. For increasing body’s immunity during hypothyroidism, even immune-modulator drugs are given to the patient.

You would be surprised to know that animal study conducted by researchers proved that guggul enhances the healthy thyroid functioning by increasing the conversion of inactive thyroxin (T4) to more active triiodotyronine (T3). This is done by escalating the thyroid proteolytic activity along with the uptake of iodine into thyroxin without any rise in thyroid stimulating hormone production.

Selenium provides a number of useful enzymes in the body which is known as selenoproteins. These certain specified selenoproteins are helpful in catalyzing thyroid hormone T4 into T3. any deficiency of selenium in the body can lead to thyroid function impairment. Drug pippali is valuable in absorption of selenium and hence used widely.

Nature Cure or Naturopathy Methods

Nature cure systems basically target the readjustment of the human body system from various abnormal functions and conditions to normal functions and conditions. Nature cure or naturopathy adopts only those methods of cure that conform to the constructive natural principles. These methods remove the accumulation of toxic materials, waste materials and other poisonous items without injuring all the vital organs of the human body in any manner. These methods also stimulate the organs in the process of purification and elimination of toxic and other waste matter for their best and efficient functioning.

The foremost and first requirement to cleanse the body of toxic and other waste materials is to regulate and control the diet system that a person consumes. This diet system not only stimulates the organs of purification and elimination, but also prevents such accumulation in the future, thus preventing several diseases even before they occur. It is advisable to avoid comprehensively all food items that form toxic acids, especially certain types of proteins, fats and starches for a week to a fortnight in case of any sickness to eliminate the accumulated toxins and also confine the diet system to fresh fruits and vegetables that have the capacity to disinfect the alimentary canal and the entire stomach.naturopathy methods

If a patient is suffering from an overload of morbid matter, as is the case with more acute diseases, complete fasting for a few days will be necessary to eliminate the toxins. However, to sustain body energy, the patient should consume as much fresh fruit juice as possible. If you are feeling sick, the basic rule is not to eat your regular diet, but adapt to a light diet of fruit juices, fresh fruits and easily digestible raw vegetables. You will have to wait until your usual healthy appetite returns and the body become normal. The fundamental principle of nature cure is that loss of appetite is a warning from nature that you should not place any further burden on your digestive organs. You can resume mildly alkaline food items like fresh raw vegetables as well as sprouted cereals or sprouted whole grains after continuing with a fresh fruit diet at least for a week until you have recovered from the illness.

Another major factor in nature cure for diseases through natural methods is to stimulate the body vitality. Water is a highly powerful stimulant and it can be used in several ways in the form of baths or packs at varying temperatures. The body heat can be easily lowered by applying cold water, especially to the lower belly or abdomen, which is the seat of most of our diseases. It is also advisable to apply cold water to the sexual organs to cool them. This can be achieved by sitting in a tub filled with cold water up to the hip. This bath lowers the body heat immediately and also stimulates the sensitive nervous systems in the lower body, which slowly extends to the other nervous systems in the body, cooling them also slowly. Hydrotherapy, as wet packs is another simple and natural method of reducing inflammation and pain and also serves as an easy method for abating fevers, with absolutely no side effects. It is also very important that you should always drink only assured pure water and avoid contaminated water completely.

Other natural methods that are primarily used in curing diseases are sunbathes, air, massage and exercise. Sunbathes and pure, unpolluted air have the capacity to revive the dead skin and to maintain the skin in its normal, healthy condition. Massages tone up not only the muscles and tendons as most people believe, but even the nervous system. Massages also energize and quicken the bodily metabolic system and blood circulation. Exercises promote overall inner health, strengthen muscles and eliminate tensions in the body. Especially, yogic exercises not only achieve all these but also bring about physical and mental harmony.

From the above, it should be obvious that a well-balanced, properly planned diet, pure drinking water, adequate physical exercise and the observation of other laws of nature, such as plenty of sunlight, fresh air, adequate rest, scrupulous cleanliness, custom-designed lifestyle and right mental attitude are capable of ensuring proper health and even prevent most diseases even before they occur. Nature cure can also cure most diseases without any medications are other modern methods of medicine. If you have any further questions on the above matters, please feel free to contact us and we will definitely respond to you immediately. We shall discuss individual methods of nature cure methods in our forthcoming series.
