Alcoholism: Know more about it

Alcohol addiction is one of the most types of addictions all across the world. Alcoholism is a condition wherein a person cannot live his/her normal life without consuming alcohol. This condition or disease can be physical or psychological. It is very common these days and can be harmful for life in a lot of cases. It doesn’t only harm the person consuming alcohol, but also his family and society.

In certain societies which are more liberal, this condition is more prevalent. In America, it is believed that around 13% of the people face some kind of alcohol dependence or abuse. People consuming alcohol become dependent on it and the process of de-addiction is sometimes more difficult than in cases of heroin or drugs.

When someone consumes alcohol, the initial problems arise with the individual’s health. Initially, the effects are that people cannot perform their work properly and also can’t meet social and family expectations. It becomes a big problem for people who are addicted to alcohol and drive or operate heavy machines. Alcoholism can even cause legal issues and can damage or effect relations with family members and damage the society in the big picture.alcoholism

When people try to withdraw themselves from the habit, there are symptoms like vomiting, anxiety, seizures and sweating etc. One finds it impossible to cut-down on the intake or stop oneself from consuming it.

Treatment for getting rid of alcoholism depends on how severe the problem is; accordingly, one can reduce the intake or abstain from alcohol completely. Two major ways of fighting the problem are Therapy and Counseling. The support of loved ones and family also plays a major role.

SYMPTOMS OF ALCOHOLISM

  • The person continues to consume alcohol, knowing the ill-effects of his/her family and career
  • Initially drinks start as a recreation, but eventually, it becomes a habit and then people start drinking alone.
  • People become violent and extremely emotional after drinking.
  • They become hostile when someone confronts them with the situation.
  • People cannot restrict their drinking habits or make it moderate.
  • Cannot meet their commitments like work, college and family responsibilities.
  • They start neglecting hygiene and how they look
  • Neglect their food habits and diet.
  • People hide and consume alcohol
  • They feel like consuming alcohol every day.
  • They usually shiver in the morning and feel uneasy due to alcohol intake in the night.
  • There may be memory loss in some cases or blackouts.
  • The Liver can start showing up problems
  • Depression and unhappiness in case they don’t get to drink

CAUSES OF ALCOHOLISM

The causes of alcoholism may not be typical as it is a habit and not a disease. People become dependent on alcohol. If Men consume 15 beer bottles in a week or women consume the same quantity then there are high risks of alcoholism. Even if someone consumes five or more than five drinks in a week, they are at high risk of being in trouble.

REMEDIES FOR ALCOHOLISM

The treatment depends on factors like dependence levels. If a person consumes too much alcohol, but is not dependent on it, abstinence can help or they can cut-down on the intake. In cases where there is an absolute dependence on alcohol, the patient may have to quit the intake completely. It is very difficult to achieve this goal as the patient has to understand and accept how big the problem is. Quitting alcohol will also bring some initial health issues and withdrawal symptoms.  The support of family and friends is a must. Someone has to control and supervise the patient and tell him/her not to consume alcohol at all.

Some home remedies are also present to fight the problem; however, these are majorly involving lifestyle changes and modifications.

  • Yoga: It helps to be physically fit, at the same time it relaxes the patient. Helps to fight stressful conditions.
  • Meditation: It helps you focus much better and strengthens your willpower. One can focus more on goals and feel more relaxed.
  • Counseling: Family counseling is very important as it helps the near ones cope up better and they understand the problems of the patient. Their support and encouragement becomes vital in getting the outcome
  • Psychological Treatment: After consuming alcohol, an individual can face emotional problems, anxiety and mood-swings. Treatment of the cause can be quite effective.

Diet for Alcoholism

There is no specific diet for them; however a change in diet can help bring improvements. Consumption of alcohol causes problem for the lever. Cancer in the liver or liver cirrhosis can also happen. A healthy diet can help delay the onset of such problems. A healthy diet also helps protect the patient and makes his body stronger and better immunity to fight any such health conditions.

  • Have a lot of vegetable and fruits, have a lot of oranges, kiwi, peaches and carrots. Include green leafy vegetables and food with lots of Vitamin E and C.
  • Have a lot of Lean meat like chicken, turkey and fish. This increases the protein intake. Lentils and soya bean are also a good source of protein.
  • One should consume Brown Rice, whole wheat pasta and Oats.

SUGGESTION FOR PEOPLE FACING ALCOHOLISM

Quitting alcohol is the only half battle won, not getting into the habit again is even more difficult. There are organizations helping the cause of quitting alcoholism. The experiences of people and the journey towards quitting alcohol in a lot of cases show that quitting alcohol is difficult but not impossible.

From the Ayurvedic point of view, there exists an Ayurvedic method of treatment that can help solve this problem through a series of step. The treatment occurs in three stages, these are:  the intake of digestive herbs that help improve the overall health of a person, elimination of any toxic substances present in the body and lastly, provision of a useful energy drink or rather “tonic” that may help revitalize. Other common methods preferred by many today include herbal treatments and spiritual advice.

Some simple lifestyle tips can really improve the standard of health and prevent the chances of “frigidity” to ever happen. These range from simple diet related tips to lifestyle-related advice. When talking about diet, whole wheat flour and brown rice are preferred to their unhealthy counterparts that are white flour and white rice. Home Remedies for Insect Bites

This is something that is pretty common and can happen anywhere and at any time. Insects are present everywhere, indoor and outdoor. Some insect stings aren’t too harmful and some stings lead to diseases.

When stung, the most immediate and common symptom would be “irritation” near the area where the person has been stung. It may swell, become red in color and can itch for hours. Adverse reactions such as choking can also occur depending on the insect. Although most insect bites are not harmful, one must take a person’s initiative in tackling insect bites in the right way, to prevent acquiring any disease or becoming a victim of a severe skin reaction.

When bitten, there are certain Do’s and Don’ts. Follow these, and you will be free of any insect-ridden problems.insect bite treatment

DO’s

  • When you are stung, on the arm or leg, the first thing to do would be to lower that part of the body in order to prevent spreading of the venom.
  •  Later, to reduce swelling, elevate that part of your body.
  • Whenever your body moves, the venom spreads faster and so, it is advised that you stay seated or rest on your bed.
  • If the area is getting bigger, swelling rapidly and becoming redder, it would be best if you went to a doctor immediately for medical attention.
  •  If the person has been stung in areas such as the mouth or throat, or the person appears to be going through an anaphylactic shock, visit a doctor as soon as possible.

DON’Ts

  • The most common reaction to a bite is to scratch that particular area. Well, the truth is, you shouldn’t. It only worsens the problem and increases the risk of infection.
  •  If you try to experiment with the area where you have been stung, such as rubbing or squeezing, things will only get worse. If blisters are formed, do not break them.

Home Remedies:

Tackling this problem at home isn’t difficult and there are a number of home remedies that one can adopt to help tackle insect bites and stings:

  • Remove the sting and wash it with water using some soap or antiseptic hand wash.
  • Soak a cloth in cold water and apply on affected area and press gently.
  • Baking Soda – apply it on the affected area and it will help neutralize the acidic nature of the sting (being basic itself)
  • Crush basil leaves and apply the paste on the affected area.
  • Turmeric and sandalwood – apply  half a teaspoon of each to the wound for healing and a soothing sensation.
  • Neem –  mix neem powder with water to create neem paste and apply it at site of wound for 15 minutes.
  • Banana – the inner part of a banana, i.e. The inner skin when rubbed on the site of bite, helps reduce swelling and irritation.
  • Coriander – take 2-3 teaspoons of coriander juice and apply on site of the bite. To make the paste, add and crush coriander leaves and mix with one-third cup of water.

Insects will obviously never stop biting, so it’s best if you take precaution, follow the Do’s and Don’ts mentioned above and you will never have problems with insect bites and stings.

Anantasana : Yoga Pose

Anantasana is known as side-reclining leg lift posture, since this asana is performed by reclining on one side of the body and lifting one leg upwards.

Procedure for Anantasana

  1. You should lie down on the ground on your right side. You should actively press through the right heel, flexing the ankle and using the outside of your foot to stabilize yourself in that position. If you still feel that your position is not stable, you can brace the soles against a wall.
  2. You should stretch the right arm straight outwards along the ground and parallel to the chest, so that there is a long straight line from the heels to the fingertips of your hands. You should now bend the right elbow, lift your head slightly and support the head with your left palm. After that, you should slide your elbow away from the chest for stretching the armpit, still holding the head.
  3. You should rotate the left leg externally, so that your toes are pointing towards the ceiling. You should bend and draw your knee towards your chest. You should reach across towards the inside of your left leg to take hold of your left big toe with the index and middle fingers. You can secure this grip by wrapping your thumb around the other two fingers. If you are not able to reach up and grip your toe, you can use a yoga strap, loop it around the ankle and hold on to the strap. You should extend the left leg upwards in the direction of the ceiling.Anantasana Yogasana
  4. The left leg raised is likely to angle slightly forward and the top portion of the buttocks will drop back. You should firm up the sacrum against your pelvis, creating a type of the fulcrum that will be helpful in moving the left leg slightly backwards to maintain the perfect perpendicular position.
  5. You should press through both your heels actively. You can stay in this position for 30 seconds and extend it to one minute or more later on with practice. After holding the posture, you can slowly release the left leg, exhaling and take a few slow breaths.
  6. You should now turn on to your left side and repeat the same process with the right leg.

Benefits of Anantasana

Anantasana stretches the backs of the legs and the sides of the chest, while toning up your belly.

Preparatory and Follow-Up Asanas

Ananda Balasana : Yoga Pose

Ananda Balasana is termed as happy baby posture and it is quite a simple asana. In fact, this asana has got its name, since most babies take up this posture involuntarily, when they are lying on their backs. Masters of yoga go to the extent of saying that we do lots of asanas when we are young babies, even without any awareness that they are very good asana poses that increase the flexibility of the body and keep the body in healthy condition. However, we usually forget all those asanas or postures one by one as we grow and are forced to learn them afresh at a later stage from a yoga master. Ananda Balasana is one such asana.

Procedure of Ananda Balasana

  1. You should lie on your back, preferably on a folded blanket. You should exhale and bend the knees towards and into our abdomen.
  2. You should inhale and hold the outsides of both feet with both hands. Your knees should remain open slightly wider than your chest. You should now push your knees slowly upwards until they reach your armpits.
  3. You should now position each one of your ankles directly over the knees, with your shins remaining perpendicular to the ground. You should flex the legs through your heels. You should push your feet gently up into your hands, even while pulling the hands down for creating more resistance.Ananda Balasana-Yogasana
  4. You should coax and move your thighs inwards towards your chest and press them down towards the ground through the chest, while lengthening your spine. You can release the tail bone also towards the ground. The base of your skull should be lengthened away from the back of the neck for maximum stretching in this position.
  5. You can hold this pose easily for 30 seconds and extend it upto one minute later. After completing the asana, you can slowly release your feet back to the ground while exhaling. You should rest in this lying position, taking a few breaths slowly before getting up.

Benefits of Ananda Balasana

The anatomical focus of this asana is on the hips. Ananda Balasana stretches the inner groins as well as the back spine gently. It calms the brain and is quite helpful in relieving fatigue and stress.

Precautions and Contraindications for Ananda Balasana

Persons suffering from knee injuries and pregnant women are not advised to perform this asana. People with neck injuries can do this with a thick folded blanket as the support for the head. Beginners can use yoga straps to hold their feet, if they are unable to reach them with their hands.

Preparatory and Follow-Up Asanas

You can perform Balasana and Virasana before Ananda Balasana and follow it up with Adho Mukha Svanasana.
