A detailed view on body types from an Ayurvedic point of view

Ayurveda has a lot of significance in the history of mankind. It has given the human mind and body a lot of importance. According to Ayurveda, the nature displayed by human beings is called the “Prakriti”. A combination of the three doshas (namely Vata, Pitta and Kapha) defines the Prakriti or the characteristics of the human being.

Doshas are the three energies present in our body governing the physiological activity. In Sanskrit, dosha is anything that contaminates. In simple words, unhealthy and disease-causing factors within the body are called doshas.

Knowing your dosha helps in understanding the basic physical and psychological nature of an individual to create a well-customized diet for a healthy lifestyle. Everyone has a unique dosha as per their biological mechanisms. Understanding your dosha well is often the key to a healthy life.

Every human being has variable degrees of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha in uneven distribution. It’s rare to find someone with an even distribution of the three doshas. But although we have the three doshas, we are ruled by one dominant dosha in our body.

Vata Dosha:

People with Vata dosha show immense physical as well as emotional traits.

  • They are very active, restless as well as energetic because of their quick metabolism.
  • They are skinny with little muscle development and projected joints.

  • They are the light sleeper with a quick and irregular pulse and are prone to sleep disorders.
  • They are impulsive and very careless about financial matters (which is evident to their restless nature).
  • They demonstrate high creative thinking, quick learning abilities, and innovation.
  • They are introverts, emotional, shy, and modest, lacking in confidence.

Pitta Dosha:

People with the pitta dosha are mainly aggressive with fiery (Agni) elemental character.

  • They are of the medium body type, with good muscular development with soft, warm skin. They are prone to skin diseases, rashes, sunburn, premature greying and hair loss.
  • Their desires and needs are robust in nature.
  • They are gentle sleeper with a powerful and stable heartbeat.
  • They are the extrovert ones and always desire to be the centre of attraction.
  • They are good at managing their emotions but sometimes they become irritable and stressed. They are aggressive, bold and determined, and are leaders.
  • They are good at handling their finances.

Kapha Dosha:

People with a dominant Kapha dosha tend to have a solid or massive build physically.

All about beating Depression in a Natural way

Depression idepressions a silent killer. While medically it is defined as “the state of depressed mood pertaining to the negative thoughts in a person”, for a layman the definition can be “a state of lessened mental and physical activity owing to a particular thought, which is usually negative”.

One of the lesser known facts about depression is that prolonged state of depression can lead to noncurable psychiatric disorder. In other words, depression can be said as the initial stage of mental illness. Out of the many reasons that stand against this particular disease, the most intense one is the disruption of the normal lifestyle of an individual. Usually, many people do not easily adapt to a new change in their routine life or even can’t tolerate any change in their environment; be it physical or psychological. What makes the situation worse is their inability to share this feeling with anyone. Highlighting briefly on the various causative factors of depression:

  • A disastrous trauma
  • A severe injury to head due to an accident
  • Witness to some heinous crimes
  • Loneliness
  • Old age
  • Misappropriate diet
  • Unhealthy lifestyle
  • Lack of conjugal happiness
  • Hereditary inheritance
  • Menstrual cycle changes in case of females

There are many ways for combating this disorder also. Medical science has been showing a profound increase in the number of medicines for correcting this disorder. However, chemical ingredients have their own side effects too! There are many alternative ways apart from the synthetic drugs. One of the most viable and effective approaches is through natural ways. These alternative ways, being devoid of chemicals, work wonder in curing mental sickness. Few important points are jotted below:

  • “Early to bed and early to rise makes a person healthy, wealthy and wise”. This well-known English proverb has ample of importance in curing the depression state of an individual. Breathing fresh air and walking amidst the peaceful, serene environment of sunrise soothes the body and mind of an individual.
  • Eating a balanced diet is one of the prerequisites towards healing mental depression. There are many notable factors associated with this: eating at the right time, including the sufficient nutrients in the right proportion in every meal, inclusion of omega3fatty acids and exclusion of caffeine in the diet.
  • At least once and maximum up to thrice try to take mood enhancing supplements in a day. There are different mood enhancing or stimulating agents available like S-adenosyl-L-methionine, Folic acid, etc. It is to be remembered that green tea is one of the most effective mood stimulators that is naturally found.

Apart from these methods, there are different other approaches through which this depression mental condition can be cured. For example, Ayurvedic treatment, flower treatment (aroma treatment), proper counseling, etc. in addition to these treatments, it is the duty as an individual and as a society as a whole, to help people come out of this depression state. If you witness any person with such disease, then do not hesitate to take a step forward for helping the individual. Even if you have any individual within your family suffering from depression, make sure not to leave the person alone and more importantly do not provoke the person and try to avoid the cause of depression for the person.

Remember, while medicines act as a supplement, family support, love, and care are the primary ingredients for curing this disorder.

Cold-Common Ailments and Simple Home Remedies

Cold-Common Ailments and Simple Home RemediesMost of us will be familiar with the joke about colds, “Cold vanishes in a week if you take medicines and they go away in 7 days if you do not take any medicine”. This joke indicates that there is no proper cure for colds. However, there are several remedies available in the Ayurveda field of medicine for both prevention of colds from occurring and for cure of colds within a short period effectively.

Basic Facts about Colds

You may be surprised to know that there are more than 200 viruses that cause colds. These viruses enter your body when the coughs or sneezes of other people have placed these viruses in the air or on objects that you touch. It is true to some that extent that colds go away on their own, if you remain in a clean atmosphere and take adequate rest. However, during the time colds persist, they can really make you feel miserable. Several simple home remedies will provide you faster relief from this miserable condition if you utilize the power of certain simple home remedies.

Misconception about Cold

One major misconception about colds is that you catch cold if you get exposed to chill weather or soak in rain. However, studies on colds have clearly proved that the weather or rain do not have any significant effect on the occurrence of colds. The New England Journal of Medicine reported a study on colds. The research team divided the people undergoing the study into two groups. Both groups were exposed to various viruses that are the cause of common cold. However, the research team kept one group in a room maintained at a temperature of 5oC when they were exposed to the cold viruses. They kept the other group in a room at 30oC when they got exposed to the virus. This large difference in the room temperatures of the two rooms did not have any noticeable effect and both groups began to suffer from cold at nearly the same rate, speed and strength of severity.

Symptoms of Colds and Their Severity

On most occasions, the symptoms of colds are confined around the neck, throat and the nostrils, making you sneeze and/or cough. You will also suffer from sore throat and nasal and throat congestion during attacks of cold. However, it is advisable to visit a medical practitioner if you face the following serious conditions or symptoms of cold.

  • If you begin to wheeze substantially
  • If you find normal breathing quite difficult
  • If substantial amounts of phlegm come out of your mouth or get formed in your throat when you cough due to cold
  • If you feel strong pain in your throat, chest, lungs, nostrils and ears

Home Remedies for Faster Relief from Cold

Andrographis

In Ayurveda, one of the traditional treatments for cold was with Andrographis herb. A study furnished Andrographis herb to one group of people suffering from cold, while the other group was provided with placebos or dummy pills. The study clearly showed that those who took Andrographis herb achieved substantially much higher reduction in the cold symptoms of sore throat and running nose, along with proportional decline in general body pains and aches that usually accompany an attack of cold, compared to those who took placebos. Any Ayurveda medication that contains the equivalent of dried Andrographis herb between 500 mg and 1.5 gm is quite an effective dose for quick resolution of cold.

Garlic

Garlic is a powerful and natural antiseptic that has the ability to fight cold viruses effectively. You can put a small piece of garlic clove in your mouth, which will result in directing the garlic fumes towards your throat and lungs. When the garlic clove begins to soften, the flavour might become quite strong. If you feel the flavour as severe at any point of time, you can chew on the garlic, make it into small pieces and swallow it. You can drink a small quantity of warm water to wash away the garlic flavour from your mouth and throat. Garlic is also available in capsule forms of therapeutic doses. Allicin is the major component of garlic that acts on colds strongly. You can take medications that have Allicin but you should strictly adhere to the recommendations of the manufacturer. Further, people suffering from high blood pressure and taking medication for that should consult their physicians before taking medicines containing Allicin as a remedy for cold. On a few occasions, you may suffer from indigestion, diarrhoea or wind when you take garlic as the medicine for cold. You can minimise these side effects with enteric-coated medical capsules.

Steam Remedies

A steam tent created by keeping your head wrapped with a towel spread over a large bowl containing boiling water and breathing in and out that hot steam through your nostrils for a period of 5 to 10 minutes is quite effective against cold. However, you should be careful to keep a safe distance between the boiling water and your face, since inhaling these hot vapours or direct contact of the facial skin with the hot water can scald your skin. It is better to conduct this steam remedy with the bowl placed on a sturdy table but most people try this method sitting in their bed, which is not at all advisable.

If you want even faster relief from cold through this steam remedy, you can add a few drops of eucalyptus oil or thyme oil to the hot water. But you should have your eyes tightly shut when you do this, since the combination of hot steam and the vapours of the above essential oils can cause strong irritation to your eyes.

Latest Research at Duke University Confirms Enormous Benefits of Yoga in Treatment of Illnesses

Yoga-PostureA team of scientists at the Duke University conducted extensive review and research on the beneficial aspects of yoga in treatment of diseases, ailments and other disorders. They have published a paper in the highly respected journal, ‘Frontiers in Psychiatry’ on January 24, 2013. The researchers have asserted that yoga is as powerful as psychotherapy or antidepressants, tackling several mental health issues such as depression, stress and attention deficiency. They believe that even extreme conditions like schizophrenia could be controlled by yoga practices.

For majority of psychiatric disorders, medications are the standard prescriptions. However, the review by this team of scientists claim that yoga is highly useful in modulating levels of several key body chemicals such as serotonin as well as cortisol, a stress hormone.

Dr. Meera Balasubramaniam, the leader of the research team informed in a recent interview to Hindustan Times that yoga works very well as a separate standalone remedy for many illnesses, while it works as a very good adjunct to common medications in other diseases or disorders. She added that there is a definite positive group effect when yoga is practiced with a sizable group of afflicted people.

Approximately more than 200 million people practice yoga globally, with more than 100 million people in India alone, while around 16 million people are students of yoga in the United States. Even though medical science has recognized and appreciated the power of yoga in healing physical and mental ailments, there has been considerable skepticism in the potential of yoga in tacking several major illnesses on a specific basis.

The practice of yoga gained global popularity in the middle and later half of the twentieth century. The followers of yoga swelled in several countries after cultural and social icons like the Beatles and several Hollywood actors and stars started subscribing to the practice of yoga as beneficial. This sudden popularity of yoga resulted in strong negative fallout also, with several people proclaiming themselves as great yoga masters and gurus but duping and fraudulently cheating innocent and gullible people, accumulating huge amounts of money in that process. Such fraud gurus earned millions but the yoga methods and practices that they taught were mostly incorrect and even hazardous and counterproductive in many instances.

In India, the birthplace of yoga, a huge population have come to accept yoga as a healthy practice and adopt it as cure for several ailments. Even here, the medical fraternity of India were forced to counter and overcome several potentially misleading and even outlandish claims from a few yoga masters who have become quite popular. One of them, the Haridwar-based yoga guru, Baba Ramdev, claimed that he could cure even one of the most serious diseases that the society has been encountering for the past few decades, namely, HIV-AIDS. Unfortunately, he has not been able to substantiate his claim so far.

The research team of yoga mentioned in their paper on yoga in the journal, ‘Frontiers in Psychiatry’, “Yoga has become such a cultural phenomenon that it has become difficult for physicians and patients to differentiate legitimate claims from hype. Our goal was to examine whether the evidence matched the promise.” They have emphatically affirmed that the evidences match the promises in most cases.

The research review of the Duke University scientists further shows that yoga is quite helpful in controlling serotonin, acetylcholine, and gamma amino butyric acid (GABA), the major body chemicals that are the causes for many mental illnesses. Further, the research on performance of yoga showed that it enabled persons suffering from attention deficiency hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) to handle many of the difficulties associated with ADHD such as impulsivity and inattention, which lakhs of students are suffering from in India.

Students practising yoga were able to put to better use the techniques of yoga that they learned during the practice in calming themselves whenever they became agitated. Dr. Meera added, “There was also some evidence of improved homework compliance.” According to her, certain evidences suggested that yoga benefited patients suffering from mild depressions even without any medication. However, she stated that cases of serious afflictions like severe depression and ADHD, as well as grave conditions like schizophrenia required combined therapy of prescribed drugs and yoga for maximum effect. She added, “More research to evaluate the benefits of yoga, including its mechanisms, is certainly warranted.”

These conclusions of the Duke University research team has come at a time when the entire global medical fraternity is grappling more and more with growing mental health disorder patients. This condition is even more exacerbated for low income families in many developing countries like India and other under-developed countries where access to correct medication is very poor and irregular. Statistics revealed by the World Health Organization (WHO) reveal that more than 350 million people are suffering from depression globally and it is the leading cause of many disabilities in people in the world at present.

Other recent studies have brought out the limitations in the effectiveness of drugs alone as solutions to several mental illnesses. WHO conducted a Primary Care Study and the study showed clearly that around 60% of the patients suffering from depression continued to be tormented by that condition even after being treated for a full year with anti-depressants.

Dr. P. Murali Doraiswamy, a co-author of the Duke University research paper emphasised, “The search for improved treatments, including non-drug based, to meet the holistic needs of patients is of paramount importance and we call for more research into yoga as a priority.”

Dr. Meera concluded, “Yoga in addition to medication for mental health situations is also useful because the cure rates of medicines tend to be variable and yoga may provide a safe and acceptable adjunct.”

Individual Physical and Mental Factors Playing Important Role in Ayurveda Treatments

Ayurveda considers several crucial physical and mental factors for treatment of various diseases, disorders, and ailments. The primary factors that Ayurveda practitioners look into are dosha, rasa, Vipaka, Veerya, Prabhava Guna and Pathya. Let us understand a few important details about each one of these factors in this article.

Tridosha

The biological process of all living organisms is controlled and governed by three major factors, known as Tridosha. They have been termed as Pitta, Vata, and Sleshma or Kapha. Ayurveda holds that all physical and mental disorders occur when these three doshas lose their normal balance in the body.

Pitta

Pitta is the manifestation of Tejas or internal energy in our body. The Pitta energy is the cause for several internal activities in all living organisms like assimilation and digestion of food, heat production, blood pigmentation, healthy state of endocrine glands, and tissue building.

Vata

Vata is the function of our nervous systems. It includes both the central nervous system and all other automatic nervous systems present in our body.

Sleshma or Kapha

Sleshma or Kapha is the level of heat regulation or thermostatic function in our body. Further, this factor also influences the secretion or formation of several body fluids, such as mucus and synovial. Kapha plays a key role in regulating all our biological processes, in providing nutrition to our body tissues and in coordinating all our body systems.

When one of these doshas become either high or low, disorders begin to occur. For example, a sharp drop in Vata level can lead to paralysis in an individual due to a severe breakdown of the nervous systems. When pitta becomes high, diseases like jaundice, hepatitis, etc. begin to form. When Kapha is higher, we catch a cold, which leads to several other disorders like a headache, body ache, fever, etc.

Rasa

Rasa is nothing but taste. Taste is classified into six types in Ayurveda, namely, Madhura or sweet,Amla or sour, Lavana or salty, Katu or pungent, Tikta or bitter, and Kasaya or astringent. When we consume food with each type of taste, certain changes occur in our body functions.

Madhura

Madhura or sweet taste is usually pleasant, and it is an excellent tonic for heart and brain if consumed in correct quantities. It is also galactagogue, promoting secretion of milk as well as a few other important fluids in our body. Madhura pacifies Pitta and Vata but aggravates Kapha.

Amla

Amla or sour taste is sialagogue, and it is an excellent appetizer, improving the digestive system if consumed within limits. Amla aggravates Pitta and Kapha but pacifies Vata.

Lavana

Lavana or salty taste is diuretic, and it works as digestive expectorant and appetizer. It is easily soluble and acts as softening and water retaining agent. Lavana also aggravates Pitta and Kapha but pacifies Vata.

Katu

Katu or pungent taste is also a sialagogue and lacrimatory. It is an appetizer. The tingling sensation produced by Katu taste on the tongue is useful in dyspepsia. Katu aggravates pitta and Vata but pacifies Kapha.

Tikta

Tikta or bitter taste produces dryness in our mouths, but it is a good appetizer. Tikta pacifies Pitta and Kapha but aggravates Vata.

Kasaya

Kasaya or astringent taste also causes dryness in the mouth and leads to soreness and stiffness in the throat. However, it is diuretic and helps in healing of wounds. Kasaya also pacifies Pitta and Kapha but aggravates Vata.

Vipaka

Vipaka is the metabolism of various organs that arises due to biochemical changes brought about by foods and drugs when the gastro-intestinal digestion occurs. Vipaka is directly related to rasa but the actions of these two vary considerably. The action of Vipaka is delayed, systemic, physiological and inferable but not-perceivable. The action of rasa is immediate, local, physiological and psychological and quite perceivable.

Veerya

Veerya is the potency of food or a drug. Veerya usually denotes the clinical efficacy of a particular drug. Veerya is classified into two categories, namely, Sheeta or cold and Ushna or hot. Sheeta diminishes secretions, stabilizes our excretory functions, stops bleeding, promotes vigour and vitality and aggravates Vata and Kapha, while pacifying pitta. On the other hand, Ushna helps in storing up of internal energy, leads to easy digestion, causes thirst and aggravates Pitta, while pacifying Vata and Kapha.

Prabhava

Prabhava is the specific characteristic influence of each drug. It is the empirical action of a drug and cannot be easily explained in lay terms.

Guna

Guna denotes the actual physical properties of any drug. Ayurveda recognises 20 Gunas that act in various ways during treatment with a drug.

  1. Guru or heavy properties induces feelings of heaviness, fatigue and dullness. It impairs digestion but promotes the quantity of waste products.
  2. Laghu or light properties helps in easy digestion and promotes body fitness.
  3. Sheeta or cold properties provides a cooling effect. It impedes blood flow. It pacifies Pitta, while aggravating Vata and Kapha.
  4. Ushna or hot properties increases body temperature, improves blood circulation, enhances urine and sweat, causes thirst and stimulates both appetite and digestion. Ushna aggravates pitta.
  5. Snigdha or unctuous properties produces a soothing effect on our bodies and eliminates waste products. It aggravates Kapha but pacifies Vata.
  6. Ruksha or dry properties provides uncomfortable feeling and reduces vitality, vigour, and libido.
  7. Manda or dull properties acts slowly. This properties  pacifies deranged Doshas.
  8. Teeksha or sharp properties is potent and rapid-acting. It clears body channels and removes morbidity. It aggravates pitta.
  9. Sthira or immobile properties stabilises all physiological functions.
  10. Sara or spreading properties is quite penetrative and stimulates the excretory system.
  11. Mrudu or soft properties makes all body tissues loose and soft. It aggravates Kapha while pacifying pitta and Vata.
  12. Kathina or hard properties causes firmness and stiffness in the body. It aggravates Vata.
  13. Vishada or clear properties removes sliminess and heals ulcers. It aggravates Vata.
  14. Picchila or slim properties increases body weight and stimulates excretory organs. It also promotes healing of fractures and wounds.
  15. Slakshna or smooth properties promotes tissue synthesis. It aggravates pitta and Kahpa.
  16. Khara leads to emaciation. It aggravates Vata.
  17. Sthula or bulky properties obstructs vessels, channels, and tubes in our bodies. It is not easily digestible.
  18. Sukshma or minute properties penetrates all part of our bodies easily. It aggravates Vataa.
  19. Sandra or solid properties nourishes the body.
  20. Drava or fluid properties is able to pervade entire body.

Pathya

Pathya is the study of food-to-drug and drug-to-drug interactions. Ayurveda terms the food-drug theory as pathya-apathya. When a patient follows a specific drug regimen, certain food items or drugs must be completely avoided during Ayurveda treatment, since they can reduce the absorption of essential ingredients of the drugs, leading to ineffectiveness of the entire treatment process. Further, certain drugs can lead to irritation, injury or other side effects when they interact with other drugs. Hence, this pathya-apathya principle is strictly followed in Ayurveda.

All herbals and other Ayurveda remedies exhibit their individual actions only on the basis of the above essential factors. We shall continue with individual profiles of each herb and its usage in our subsequent articles.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Patients in Ayurveda

The entire Ayurveda medicinal theory is based on the development of a healthy metabolic system, attainment of good digestion, and achievement of proper excretion for vitality, health, and long life. Balance is essential to lead a healthy lifestyle. We should neither control or suppress our natural urges or indulge too much in them. Food intake, sleep, sexual intercourse, physical exercises and activities and emotional matters should always be moderate, neither excessive nor deficient.

Further, Ayurveda stresses that the dividing line between well-being and ill-feeling is very thin. You may have observed yourself that you feel fit and perfectly healthy one moment but immediately develop a feeling of unease within a few seconds or minutes. This change is due to the subtle disharmonies that arise within our body and mind complex. Good health is only an indication of all normal biological processes, when the physical and mental aspects remain balanced and in complete harmony. Any discord or imbalance leads to deterioration of health. As such, the approach of Ayurveda to diagnosis and treatment is completely holistic, addressing all aspects of human life, instead of concentrating on one part or organ of the body that has been affected.

Diagnosis Process in Ayurveda

With the above principles in mind, the approach to diagnosis and treatment of people suffering from various ailments and diseases differs widely in Ayurveda, compared to other branches of medicinal practices like Allopathy, Unani, Homeopathy, etc. According to Charaka Samhita, the Ayurveda doctor should conduct ten basic examinations to ascertain the present physical condition and afflictions of the patient. They are

  • Constitution
  • Body measurements
  • Abnormalities
  • Physical fitness
  • Age
  • Stability
  • Essence
  • Psychic strength
  • Digestive capacity
  • Diet suitability

Other practitioners include five more crucial criteria in the process of Ayurveda diagnosis. They are

  • Origin of ailment or disease
  • Precursory or prodrominal symptoms
  • Typical symptoms of the disease at various stages, such as initial, middle, and terminal
  • Observation of actual effect of all therapeutic procedures
  • Pathological processes

A good Ayurveda doctor uses all five senses to diagnose a patient. Ayurveda lays special emphasis on the study of marman marma or lethal points in the human body and mind. In Ayurveda, physical existence, mental existence and individual personality combine to make a single unit as a human being, with each element influencing the others. Further, personal hygiene is given high importance in Ayurveda, with standard hygienic practices like regular bathing, skin care, eye washing, cleansing of teeth and anointing the body with oil either daily or at least once or twice a week.

Treatment Process in Ayurveda

Ayurveda treatments for physical ailments and diseases are invariably based on plant-based medications but animal products and minerals are also extensively used. They are supplemented by yoga postures, pranayama or breathing exercises, meditation, etc. to bring a balance between body and mind. The pharmacology of Ayurveda is termed as dravyaguna. The medicines used in Ayurveda treatment are synergetic combinations of substances existing in nature. Dravyaguna uses herbs, leaves, barks, roots, fruits and other parts of a single plant or a combination of these products of more than one plant for maximum effectiveness and impact for a particular disease. At the same time, Ayurveda medicinal preparations take adequate care that the materials used for a single medicine are complimentary and supplementary, without any disagreement or inconsistency in their compatibility.

Simultaneously, Ayurveda insists that the practitioners of Ayurveda should use only those plants, herbs, animal products and minerals that are available within their region, since only such products will suit the people living in that region. A herb native to a particular region in India but totally strange to a region in the United States may not provide the same results in that US region as it does in the region in India to which it is native. Charaka emphasises this point clearly when he states, “Yasmin desehi yo jathah tajjam tad aushadham hitham”, meaning “What is born and grows in one’s own country alone is the most suitable and best medicine for people in that country”.

The basic treatment processes of Ayurveda concentrate on factors such as dosha, rasa, vipaka, prabhava and guna, factors related to human body and mind. These factors and their individual characteristics will be discussed in our next article. Our other articles will cover the individual nature and curing ability of each herb or plant and treatment of various disorders. Kindly hold your questions until we finish these series of articles. History of Ayurveda

Ayurveda dates back to at least 5000 years. According to Hindu religious scriptures its millions of years old, when the present universe was formed, and Svaayambhuva Manu created life in the universe, including human beings. Ayurveda is one of the four Upavedas, namely Ayurveda (Medicine), Dhanurveda (Archery), Gandharvaveda (Music and Dance), and Shastrashastra (Military Science). Ayurveda is associated with Rig Veda, Dhanurveda is associated with Yajur Veda, Gandharvaveda is associated with Sama Veda and Shastrashatra is associated with Atharva Veda. However, certain scriptures associated Ayurveda with Atharva Veda. They also combine Shastrashastra with Dhanurveda and maintain Sthapatyaveda and Shilpa Shastras (Architecture, Arts and Crafts) as the fourth Upaveda.

Ayurveda is a science of life, longevity, and prevention and even modern scientists and medical experts unanimously agree that it is the most holistic and oldest health care system on our planet. The meaning of the word ‘Ayurveda’ is ‘knowledge for long life’. The oldest medical Ayurveda scripture available today is believed to be Atreya Samhita. The sages during the early years of development of Ayurveda envisaged health as an inseparable part of human life. They received knowledge of Ayurveda treatments through meditative cognitions and hence the different treatment methods of Ayurveda, such as prevention, healing, longevity, surgery, etc. were obtained through Divine revelations. Ayurveda stemmed from such revelations and not through testing of medicines on animals or humans.

Ayurveda uses foods, herbs, aromas, colors, gems, mantras, yoga, lifestyle and surgery to prevent, heal and cure all types of ailments and diseases that afflict human beings. It is believed that there are eight major branches of Ayurveda medicine. However, two main schools are prominently accepted. They are the school of physicians following the teachings of Atreya and the school of surgeons complying with the teachings of Dhanvantari. Scholars and medical practitioners from different countries like China, Afghanistan, Persia, Tibet, Greece, Rome, etc. visited India to learn the eternal wisdom of Ayurveda and carried back that knowledge back to their countries. They translated their knowledge in their languages, and many quotations of Ayurveda are found in ancient medicine of all these countries. Eventually, the practices and principles of Ayurveda spread throughout Europe and formed the foundation of the traditional European medicine.

The modern Ayurveda principles and practices are based on three major treatises. The Charaka Samhita is a compilation of Atreya Samhita. The other two are Sushruta Samhita and Ashtanga Hridaya. Ashtanga Hridaya is a concise version of Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita. All these Samhitas are considered to be at least a few thousand years old.

Ayurveda is based on the five elements of Akasa (Ether), Vayu (Air), Agni (Fire), Jala (Water), and Prithvi (Earth) that combine to compose this universe. The body constituents are divided into seven primary elements or Dhatus, namely rasa (plasma), Rakta (blood), Maamsa (flesh), Medha (fat), Asthi (bone), Majja (marrow) and Sukra (semen of man or reproductive tissue of woman). The elemental energies or doshas that affect the health of human body are divided into three constituents known as Vata (wind), Pitta (bile) and Kapha (phlegm). Air and space form vata, fire and water constitute pitta and water and earth form kapha. Ayurveda maintains that these three doshas should remain in complete balance for maintenance of good health. When their balance becomes disturbed, and their amounts are not equal, the body becomes unhealthy in different ways. Even though surgery is also part of Ayurveda, the stress is on the development of a healthy metabolism, achieving effective digestion of food and drinks and proper excretion of unwanted wastes from the body for health and vitality. These aspects are supplemented with yoga, exercises, and meditation.

The eight components of Ayurveda are listed below. They are

  • Kaaya Chikitsa (internal medicine)
  • Kaumarabhrtyam (pediatrics)
  • Shalya chikitsa (surgery)
  • Saalaakya tantra (eye and ENT)
  • Bhuta Vidya (psychiatry)
  • Agadatantra (toxicology)
  • Rasayana (prevention of diseases, improvement of immunity and rejuvenation)
  • Vajikaranam (aphrodisiacs and improvement of health of progeny)

We will be discussing the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and ailments through Ayurveda in our next article. Meanwhile, if you have any questions about the history of Ayurveda, kindly contact us and we will be happy to provide you necessary clarifications.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Cramps

A painful contraction of the muscle is known as cramps. There are various reasons for cramps like excessive physical exercise/work, taking too much of dry and rough food articles are few of the reason behind cramps. Metabolic waste generated in the body should be discarded from the body as soon as possible, but when it doesn’t get discarded and circulates in the body, it tends to deposit at the end of nerve endings and muscle tissues which is known as ama in Ayurveda, this results in cramps. Cramps might be experienced due to various other diseases in the body too and should be diagnosed by a good doctor if it occurs frequently.

Ayurvedic Treatment: Massage is many times considered as a good therapy to treat cramps. Massaging affected parts along with the whole body with a medicated oil like Mahanarayana Taila is helpful to get rid of cramps quickly. Daily massage by self with a non-medicated oil like gingelly oil before taking a bath is generally advised for the patients who gets frequent cramps.
