Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that is chronic. It is characterized by seizures, and these seizures can vary from brief to long periods of vigorous shaking. Occasionally, such seizures can cause physical injuries too. Patients experiencing seizures or fits, as commonly called, usually lose their consciousness. This happens due to an abnormal electric activity of the brain. There are no fixed time periods after which a fit can happen. It can happen multiple times in a day or may not occur even in years.
Causes and Symptoms
The exact causes of epilepsy are not known in most of the cases. Sometimes, it can occur due to some brain injury, strokes, or tumors, or congenital disabilities, or infections in the brain. Genetic mutations can also be a reason.
Regardless of the original cause, the seizures or fits occur when the brain discharge a certain amount of electrical energy suddenly. A fit can also happen when there is a delay in delivering oxygen to the brain or when the brain is receiving insufficient oxygen. Congenital disabilities include injury to the brain at the time of delivery. Tuberculosis and parasites in the brain can also lead to sudden fits or seizures.
There is no fixed age as when a seizure can occur. In most cases, it starts before the person becomes an adult.
